Aphria Inc. APHA

Aphria, which is headquartered in Ontario, produces and sells medicinal and recreational cannabis. The company operates through retail and wholesale channels in Canada and internationally. Aphria is a main distributor of medical cannabis to Germany and has operations in over 10 countries outside of Canada. However, it does not have exposure to the U.S. CBD or THC markets due to the constraints of federal prohibition. It has some U.S. exposure through the acquisition of SweetWater, a craft brewer

Loblaws and Shoppers lobbying to sell recreational marijuana

Loblaws and Shoppers lobbying to sell recreational marijuanaI've always thought the end game for SDM was recreational marijuana along with medical marijuana.  The willingness to distribute medical cannabis is a soft play to help them sell recreational marijuana in those jusisdictions that will allow them.  If not now, then definitely positioning themselves for the future.

In the never ending game of trying to drive up sales there is always the need to increase foot traffic in Loblaw and Shopper Drug Mart locations.  Nothing better than recreational marijuana to help increase foot traffic through their stores thereby driving up sales of all goods.

At Loblaws last AGM, CEO Galean weston strongly hinted recreational pot sales were also in the company's radar.  Galen G. Weston said his focus remains on dispensing medical cannabis. But when asked whether Loblaw has closed the book on entering the recreational marijuana market, Weston said, "You can never predict the future," adding that the company is closely watching for more details about the federal government's proposed legalization of the drug.
