I recall a story wherein an investor sat in a coffee shop for weeks on end and counted trucks leaving a particular plant. He used that info to decide that management wasn't eagerly letting the market know about a slowdown in shipments. This investor shorted the stock and was rewarded when the quarterly results disappointed.
Similar stories about people counting ships at port, cars in parking lots (both at shopping centres and at plants). All this info is legally gathered and shows a lot of imagination and perseverance.
We should all applaud "truck spotting" and other tidbits shared with us.
