Spoiler alert - last paragraph:

As we hunt for underlaying meaning and attempt to frame the BRI through an established lens of geopolitical strategy that we are familiar with and understand, we’re missing what’s happening right in front of us. Chinese state-owned companies are seemingly acquiring new ports around the world by the month, new rail lines that are connecting a multitude of countries with China are being initiated on a nearly continuous basis, plans to build advanced infrastructure in dozens of countries that couldn’t otherwise afford it are on the table, new cities, financial centers, and special economic zones are being built, Chinese companies are paying top dollar for strategic international firms, and Beijing is beginning to exhibit a geo-economic clout that’s striking at the core foundations of Western democracies.
