No, that's not true. You don't have to sink to their level. Their childishness does not justify your childishness. The saying is not "Do unto others as they have done to you." It's the opposite. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." So, you have a choice. You can show a bit of maturity, suck it up, and rise above the immaturity and childishness of the naysayers, or you can prove that you are no different and sink to their level.
Have you tried responding to your husband or wife like that? Letting 'em have it because they let you have it? That makes for some fun conversations! When you respond in kind, it just makes things worse and the downward spiral continues - never ending.
I know you don't care about what others think even if they are on your side, but still, I'm going to make my opinion known.
