Goodbye, lithium for spas ....

Goodbye, lithium for spas ....

Translation Goodbye, lithium for spas Posted on November 20, 2017 at 11:15 am | Updated November 20, 2017 at 11:15 am Gone are the days when spa water was treated with lithium. The rechargeable battery industry, with Tesla in the lead, takes up so much of the product that lithium is no longer available for spa water treatment. At Trevi and Club Piscine, we admit to being out of stock, a situation that promises to be permanent. "Suppliers of spa sanitizers have dropped lithium, because they are no longer able to have the raw material," says Marc-Antoine Therrien, at Trevi. The producers decided to favor a more lucrative market, lithium batteries. " This is confirmed by Rosaire Blisle and Fils (RBF), a chemical supplier based in Saint-Jrme. "There was a rumor in 2016 that Tesla had created the problem," says Andr Fauvel, RBF technical support. But it happened all of a sudden last January. We had to receive a lot of products, but we were unable to get any. Tesla would have consumed almost all available lithium in North America, and companies no longer want to use it to make products for spas. They leave it for the batteries of electric cars. " Price explosion The demand for lithium has exploded prices in recent years. According to Mr. Fauvel, the price has tripled. Lithium is a metal that binds with chlorine and is very effective in hot water, says Fauvel. Replacement products are offered, however. "We propose a stabilized chlorine, which does a very good job. There is no difference except that it smells a little more. Just warn customers that we will not find the word "lithium" on the containers anymore. It comes in powder or pastilles. " "Those who like lithium are because they put a teaspoon a day," says Therrien. The representative of Trevi, however, assesses that the replacement product is even more effective. "It's another type of chlorine," says Therrien. Its sanitizing power is twice as strong and its pH is neutral, unlike lithium, which raised the pH. We put two times less, and it is much less expensive. Lithium was extremely expensive. " *********************
