That's why TerraE will start with a comparably small volume. A particularly innovative production should outweigh the disadvantage. The industry is talking about a "technology leap".
In the new production process, the coating of anode and cathode inside the battery cell is to be applied thinner than usual - without solvents and with less energy, reports an insider. This could reduce the total cost of production by almost ten percent and also the weight of the ultimately built-in battery pack, which consists of many individual cells.
TerraE managing director Gritzka adds that also the environmental balance by the more efficient production procedure isclearly better than with the previous manufacturers in the market."So far, one expects an electric vehicle with a CO2 backpack of up to three tons," he says. "We will need about half of these emissions."
Ultimately, however, it is not the environmental balance that determines whether the product on the market has a chance, but rather the price of the battery cells.
