How can they claim they are environmentally friendly?

How can they claim they are environmentally friendly?
What's happening with all the spent and defective batteries? From what I am reading they are burning (smelting) them or burying them in the earth. 

How can electric vehicles be any better than fuel? It is a joke IMO.
