As long as we keep in mind that the above discussion was based on the short ton ( =2000 lbs). Under the metric system it's the long ton ( the weight of 1 cubic metre of water which has an s.g. of 1; 1 tonne = 2200 lbs). There is a 10% difference between tonne and ton.

It gets a bit tricky when it comes to the conversion of ton (especially tonne) into cubic feet, since this would depend on the specific gravity (s.g.) of the sandstone which has a variation of about 27% (2.2 to 2.8). So, the total variation would be 10 + 27 = 37%.

This is important for the accuracy the gold grade estimate in gpt. People would conventionally use tonne in the calculation, since 1 tonne = 1000kg (simpler to do the math), and 1 gpt = 1ppm, etc.)

A 37% variation in gold grade would result in $M in loss or profit. So, it pays to know what was used in the estimate by the company (too conservative or optimistic).

Cheers,
GH

Very interesting, thank you for the explanation.
