For merchandising purposes, car makers such as Tesla say that they want to buy "ethical" or clean cobalt;  material produced without the use of child labour in the DRC.

Miners picked up on this as a way to excite and exaggerate the meaning of this to potential investors.

I can confirm, absolutely, that this matter is irrelevant to the future supply of cobalt.  Absolute zero impact. It is all a ruse, a scam really.  The miners are all laughing in their beer.

Why so?  Because cobalt does not clearly have DNA like we do and so avoiding county specific sources is nearly impossible..  Secondly and mainly China will purchase all the cobalt they can get from any source. They will be unbothered about the source and unfettered in their purchasing habits.

Therefore. The whole DRC child labour issue is all about politics and merchandising. It has not and will not ever have any impact on total supply.

Don't be fooled by this aspect of the business.  It is a serious and troubling matter but not a factor in cobalt overall supply.
