PINAR DEL RO.- With the incorporation of 36 new Wi-Fi sites during 2017, Pinar del Ro has managed to cover the main population centers of the province with points for Internet connection.
This is stated by Manuel Milin Villar, territorial director of the Telecommunications Company of Cuba (Etecsa) in Vueltabajo.
According to the official, the province currently has 75 public Wi-Fi sites, with which it has been possible to reach all the municipal capitals, and the most populated places in the territory.
In comparison with the 39 that existed at the end of 2016, the jump is significant.
In total, in Pinar del Ro there are more than 157 300 permanent accounts for Internet access, of which about 40,000 were opened in the last year.
The Territorial Director of Etecsa points out that the growth has been sustained. At the end of 2013, for example, the figure for permanent accounts was barely 1 165, the next year it was already 20 000, and in 2015 it closed with close to 60 000.
As part of the actions aimed at increasing access to the internet, Milin explained that since the end of September some 2,500 services have also been commercialized for connecting to the network of networks from homes (Nauta Hogar).
"In all the municipal capitals people have had the possibility of connecting in this way," he says.
The official added that in 2017 there were also an increase of some 60,000 mobile telephony services, with which the number of active lines exceeds 210,000 and also denotes a sustained increase in recent years.
This has been favored, among other factors, by the development of the technological infrastructure, which includes the tracing of more than a thousand kilometers of fiber optic cables, and the installation of 74 radio bases, which ensure cellular coverage in 95% of the Pinar del Rio territory, approximately.
This effort to computerize is part of a context also marked by the resuscitation program that has been carried out in the city of Pinar del Ro for three years.
