Q. Aurora recently acquired a stake in the Green Organic Dutchman and struck a deal with a Denmark tomato grower to expand into Europe. Where are you looking next?
We’ve had a lot of news just in the last week. We announced that
we are building a huge, million-square-foot facility in Denmark. That’s a 51-49 joint venture with our partner, who are the largest growers of tomatoes and vegetables in Scandinavia, and that’s an initiative to serve initially the Scandinavian market but also the excess will be served in the European Union — and that’s where we are developing a very, very powerful, dominant position. We already own the largest distributor of medical cannabis in Europe (Pedanios GmbH) … and through them we’re already selling into the German system.
But the beauty of this is, because we’re in the EU with this distributor, as additional medical cannabis markets are created in the European Union, we’ll be able to participate in all of them and we’re very, very bullish in that market. It’s a market, after Brexit, that will amount to more than 430 million people — and they pay in euros, which are at a premium to the Canadian dollar. Q. Aurora’s bid for CanniMed was rejected while that company plans to acquire Newstrike (Resources Ltd.), but you appear not to have backed down. Why won’t you give up?
A. The interesting thing about our bid to acquire CanniMed is that we didn’t go looking to acquire CanniMed. They weren’t even on our radar screen. What happened is that 38 per cent of the shareholders of CanniMed were unhappy with their existing management team and their ability to execute at the pace at which they were expanding. So they modelled all of the licensed producers in the system and they vetted them, and they came to us, they thought that we would be a good fit. And they asked us to make a bid for CanniMed and we did it very quickly. In five days, we turned around a bid and we made that offer. Originally, it was a friendly offer and I wish it had been accepted on a friendly basis. And, in fact, our door’s still open and if ever they do decide that they want to pick up the phone, we’d be happy to talk with them. When it was not accepted on a friendly basis, we decided to proceed with this and go directly to the shareholders of CanniMed. We think we’ve got a very compelling proposal.
