RE:THIS WOULD BE GOOD I wrote a long post a week or so ago that basically came to the defence of Jeff Sessions, saying he's not the enemy to pot he's being made out to be.
Jeff Sessions, while cetainly no lover of pot, is a champion of congressional law. In other words, he believes that what congress says is law, the white house should *enforce* as law. His ideology is in stark contrast to the ream of Obama-era 'prosecutorial discretion' overrides implemented by that administration which treated laws passed by congress coming across the President's desk for a signature not as law, but as 'suggestions' (See Gowdy link).
Many people took exception to the way Obama transcended laws passed by congress, including congress itself.
R-REP Trey Gowdy on Executive Overreach
And Sessions is likewise completely in line with this interpretation of the constitution, and this is why he went after the Obama-implemented Cole memo - NOT because he wants to go to war with pot against the wishes of his commander-in-chief.
Sessions on the Rule of Law
Now listen to Sessions' comments from a year ago. I believed a week ago when I wrote my post and I believe now that Sessions wants nothing to do with pot. He wants Congress to decide what to do with it. As long as Cole's Memo was in effect, Congress was being overriden by administration and Pot was in a state of contradiction. So, by repealing Cole's Memo, Sessions untied the hands of congress to properly inact REAL constitutionally enforcable law for dealing with marijuana the right way. This latest bill by congress is simply them reciprocating in kind. Sessions is not surprised by it, neither is he going to retaliate. It's exactly what he expected them to do in order to fill in the gap he left when he repealed the Memo.
Jeff Sessions Comments
The bottom line is that congress will restore the legal use of Pot in States where it has already been decriminalized.
On the other hand, if this bill fails, it may actually be indicitive that Congress is working towards removing it from the Banned Substances List altogether.
Either way, this is a win for anybody with money invested in the Pot industry.
