I talked to the PR guy from BIR when the stock dropped below $5 and asked if BIR would buy back shares to keep that level and he said no. At that time I was surprised then found out the board had not given permission and that BIR would not take on debt to do so even though they throw away money on the dividend. Once I heard that even though they said they would buy back 10% of their shares it was all smoke and mirrors. Bad decision to pay a dividend yet not protect the shareholder value. 

Buyback or dividend - makes no difference. Buyback improves metrics per share. If you get your dividend and buy more stock yourself, the effect on YOUR per share metrics is IDENTICAL.  The only difference is that with the dividend, you have an individual choice. With a buyback, you don't.  Otherwise, NO DIFF ...
