RE:Perception is everythingLEOTHELION wrote: For those who make the argument that patscan will not be adopted because it isn't 100% full proof, you couldn't be more wrong. Being 100% full proof isn't what society expects or demands. What people in charge of school boards or government agencies need to do is address the perception that they are doing something proactive to make buildings like schools safer. Politicians need to be seen doing something to try to address the real problem of active shooters. The status quo of doing nothing is not acceptable. All schools have locked entrances that are opened electrically from a safe and camera monitored access point. Does this change in entry protocol make schools full proof against active shooters??? NO - but the reason schools spend millions and millions to retrofit front entrances, train millions of staff on entry protocol and lockdowns is because 1) this equipment and practice can save lives 2) it gives all of us the perception that buildings are safer and we have at least tried to address the dangerous scenarios If you don't understand the basic concept of addressing society's perception of safety, then you do not understand the potential value of PAT.
First, I haven't seen anyone making that argument Leo. Maybe I have them on ignore and missed it but I haven't seen anyone say it won't be adopted because it isn't 100% foolproof. Second, I would hope that Patscan becomes part of a real solution and isn't just adopted to satisfy the publics perception that those in charge are doing something. Third, the shooter walked through an unlocked and monitored school door and pulled the fire alarm himself. So obviously school doors aren't always locked and only opened by someone monitoring the entranceways.
