I understand that you are trying compare the 2 companies, PRB and AZX based on their drill results, but the "better" results from AZX, as shown for example in your first chart, don't necessarily mean the AZX program led (or strategy taken by) by EO is better than that under Dave Palmer. However, I found the information interesting in a sense that AZX had 21 significant intercepts compared to 13 PRB intercepts. May be EO was lucky with his shallow targets. You would need to take many factors into consideration:
- Target depth: Shallow versus shallow plus the potential for UG at depth.
- The geometry of the potential deposit
- The cost of exploration
- The strategy for financing and exploration
- The ulterior motive of top management/CEO
- Track record of management

1. AZX seems to have an edge on a shallow deposit, but it would need to work harder, at least to have some kind of indication that its has potential deep targets similar to that found at Triangle. Go deep with a few holes.
2. AZX need to start showing form of potential OP extraction method, and perhaps UG, but with some innovative techniques (nothing new) like block caving which could be quite economical and could be used as a good selling point as far as the environment is concerned. Waste rock can be kept underground.
3. AZX cost of exploration is quite low, a plus for them. But they need to reduce the time period (9 years to get a new RE is not acceptable).
4. Strategy for financing is hand-to-mounth (just like living from pay-check-to-paycheck). EO did not seem to dare to have large financing. He seems to go a max of $5M at a time, or try to sell something (the 14 claims with about 0.3MozAuEq? to AEM for $5M. This is a good buy for AEM, @ $5M/0.3Moz = $16/oz in-situ, this dirt cheap, but it would seem that EO was broke at that time so he just sold the 14 claims for a song. On the other hand, PRB usually go for a much larger amount and did it when there is an opportunity to do a good deal, i.e. don't wait until you are broke.
5. Dave Palmer's strategy was very clear for Borden Lake. He wanted to drill, drill and drill and sold to the highest bidder and start again with PRB 2.0 (Probe Metals). While EO, just want to raise enough money to continue drilling and continue to be in control of the company he founded.
6. The track records are quite obvious. Dave Palmer sold Borden deposit to G for $526M (G shares were/are good). The former AZX CEO got fired for significant misrepresentations. So, the next step for an INterim CEO would be to set up a better marketing scheme to unlock the value of Orenada deposit, starting with a new RE, and go on from there with a demonstration that a deep zone is lurking under the 300m. Go deep! at least with half a dozen holes 6 x 1000m would cost around 6000m x $160/m = $1M?
Even 10 holes at 1200m would cost ~$2.0M.

On the face of it, this seems like a ridiculous question. Based on the excitement around Probe’s 2017 drill program, it's difficult to imagine Alexandria's drill results could even think about keeping up, especially considering the following highlights released last year:

  • PC-16-100: 92.7 au g/t over 8.7m
  • PC-16-197 1.5 au g/t over 316.3m
  • PC-16-197 2.0 au g/t over 143m
  • PC-16-207 3.0 au g/t over 83.1m

Probe Metals has a well-earned reputation for being an aggressive and competent exploration company, which has been rewarded with a strong market valuation. In contrast, Alexandria always has a lot of potential, but it also has a very different reputation. Its tendency to drill slowly with modest results and dilutive financing has led many investors over the years to believe Alexandria is an inefficient jockey in a challenging resource industry.

However, let’s entertain the question anyway. Instead of relying on how we feel from reading headlines or relying on past performance, we should look at the actual data.

This first chart focuses only on targets that has a combined intercept length and grade above 25. As expected, the four best hits by Probe Metals compare more than favorably to Alexandria’s best results. However, if we dig a little deeper, we can start to see just how strong the results appear to be for Alexandria.

Probe Metals failed to drill an intercept longer than 200 meters while also grading over 2.0 g/t simultaneously, while Alexandria had two such intercepts. Probe’s top drill number PC-16-100 was helped by an astounding section with a grade of 1122.2 over 0.7 meters, while the remaining 8 meters averaged a more normal 4.2 g/t.

Probe’s second-best intercept relied on a longer length of 316.3m, but it had a lower grade of 1.5 g/t and a noticeably deeper location of 387.7 to 704.0 meters under the surface. This combination of lower grade and deeper location may get impacted from a higher cut-off grade in a NI 43-101. Probe’s remaining two drill numbers, PC-16-197 and PC-16-207, seem to be solid near-surface intercepts without any caveats. While Probe Metals had 4 of the top 6 hits, Alexandria quietly had 14 of the best 20 intercepts when comparing their recent drill campaigns.

This second chart shows the results of aggregating the drill intercepts between Alexandria and Probe Metals by comparing the overall length and grade. Sample results were filtered out for this analysis where intercept length multiplied by grade were less than 25.

Where grades exceed 2 g/t of gold, Alexandria’s 1,232 meters in combined length from 45 intercepts almost doubles the combined length of 742 meters from 49 intercepts by Probe Metals. While Probe hit more targets with a grade above 2 g/t, Alexandria’s longer intercepts with higher-grades made a bigger difference.

The overall length of Alexandria’s intercepts, where length and grade exceeded 25, was 2,323 meters from 67 targets while Probe’s intercepts only totaled 1,739 meters from 67 hits. This seems even more impressive when considering Alexandria only drilled around 55,000 meters at Orenada between 2015 and 2017, while Probe Metals drilled 85,000 meters in Val-d’Or East in 2016 and 2017.

If these were the final results, then it suggests that for every 1,000m drilled by Alexandria Minerals, at least 41.2m would have an intercept length multiplied by grade over 25. In contrast, Probe Metals would have 20m of this type of intercept for every 1,000m drilled. Of course, there might be more results from either company which change these conclusions, and we cannot be too confident until both companies release their much-anticipated resource estimates sometime in Q1 this year.

This third chart shows how Alexandria focused only on near-surface targets, while Probe Metals attacked a greater variety of depths. The depth categories were determined by averaging the “from” and “to” numbers from the assays. I considered anything above 350 meters as near-surface. I’m exceedingly happy that Alexandria’s focus on near-surface targets didn’t seem to sacrifice grade.

So, what happened? As AZX investors, we are not accustomed to seeing results that exceed market expectations…. even if the market doesn’t know it yet. :-) However, there were clues about this possibility, but we could probably only figure this our retrospectively.

April, 2015: Alexandria review of Cadillac Break Property geophysics yield strong targets 
  • The Cards study, which statistically evaluates several layers of geophysical and geochemical data, has identified a number of copper-gold targets along strike with known deposits and occurrences, as well as in new territory. A total of 20 high priority copper and gold targets, and several lower priority target, have been generated by the study.
  • These targets include copper-focused targets and gold-focused targets in a variety of geologic settings, including along the Cadillac Break, where the Company’s Orenada gold project lies, porphyry-style copper and gold targets, similar to that at the Akasaba gold-copper project, and orogenic gold targets, especially in the eastern half of the property package, as reflected by the Sleepy gold project.

January 16, 2016: Update of activities
  • “We are in the process of reinterpreting the geology by incorporating the high-grade veins into a new 3D geologic model. This will aid in a more detailed assessment of the impact of the high-grade veins on future resource estimates, and will provide for new drill targets on the project.”
March 7, 2016: Alexandria Minerals sees new gold potential at Orenada through zone 4 study 
  • The existence of a suite of low angle, high-grade gold-quartz veins, dipping at roughly 30 to the southwest within the Current Resources area, with recent assays up to 17.01 g/t gold over 3.4 meters
  • The previously unrecognized occurrence of these veins beyond the boundaries of the host shear zone, into the adjacent country rocks,
  • Significant volume through the identification of a series of envelopes of gold-bearing rocks around the veins, with gold grades 2 g/t or higher (“+2 g/t isoshells”), with widths between 8 m and 20 m, and
  • New targets have been identified outside of the traditional targets.
  • In short, the reinterpretation suggests potential for increasing the grade of the existing resources, as well as for discovering new high-grade veins in and around the Orenada Zone 4 Current Resources. A complete review of the Current Resources at Orenada Zones 4 and 2 will be undertaken, in conjunction with confirmation drilling, which will allow further refinement of these models.

Maybe the thought we should take away from Alexandria’s approach to Orenada is that slow-and-steady could finally win a race. Of course, the race isn’t over yet, but recent results do seem encouraging.
