Overdosing on opioid painkillers or heroin can lead to respiratory depression, a slowing of breathing. At sufficient doses, respiratory arrest can deprive the brain and body tissues of oxygen. This can easily prove fatal, or result in debilitating organ system injury. When opioids attach to receptors in the brain, they can interact with the nerves that control a person’s respiratory rate, slowing it down to dangerously low levels. I would love to see information on opioids helping with respiratory distress, if you can find any.
