This is worth repeating. There are two separate processes, which are easily confused. The first is the index change. As a general rule, you can't buy an index, it's a hypothetical construct based on idealized conditions. The marketvectors junior gold miners index will add Novo -- and slightly decrease the weights of others -- at the end of the week. The second process is GDXJ buying NVO shares (and selling a small fraction of its current holdings to fund the purchase) to ensure that it tracks the index well. The fund manager actually has a great deal of discretion in how/when he rebalances his fund. But the more he deviates from strictly rebalancing at the closing prices on the index rebalance date, the greater the risk of tracking error.
