Ease of access is another. South Deep is at 3 km depth and very difficult to reach, whereas Kakula is shallow and easy to access. AISC for Kakula are low. This illustrates a problem in mining. We're running out of good stuff to dig up. All the low hanging fruit has been picked. Kakula is in a class all it's own.
