On the reject side, the state's regulator said Altagas's finances would be "shaky" should the deal be accepted while pro-merger arguments are that the merger would hasten the existing infrastructure's conversion to natural gas and provide financial benefits in the end. Environmentalists want renewables and are resisting the merger even as the State of Maryland has a "no fracking" law which means any frack gas has to come from somewhere else. Altagas has promised a $50 rebate to consumers which in total implies a $161 million "gift" to consumers.
