Canopy's top strains & genetics I've immersed myself into this sector and done a fair amount of due diligence on strains and genetics which I feel is the key to the success of producers such as Canopy.
What strikes me is the expectations of management and investors in this space to focus on "brand".
But after much research, I feel the key to success will be:
1. Ability to deliver. The top provinces in terms of size will be controlling distribution via central provincial liquor boards. This includes Ontario, Quebec and BC which accounts for over 75% of the Canadian population. This favors the large licensed producers which Canopy leads.
2. Quality. Just as with alcolhol. Brands will be based on manufacturer. So consumers will be looking at comparing brand X with Y. Canopy vs Aurora vs Aphria These companies will have to stop trying to get "cute" with sub-brands.
3. Price. When you go buy Vodka, you look at brand and price. Same with beer. You want no-name beer? You've got it? You want a premium brand? You've got it.
4. Strain. This is an important element that seems to be missing from most License Producers. How many focus on the number of strains? As a consumer I would want to know what strains are available today and why are available tomorrow. There should be zero differences between a Canopy, Aurora, Aphria, Telray "Blue Dream". I understand the marketing departments want to see a difference to "differentiate" but consumers are wiser. They want "vodka" not branded "clear transparent booze". So "strain names" are the key for buyers and need to become the key for producers.
