Ministry of Health and Long-term Care email to Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care/dr/HLTC2966MC-18-3472

Thank you for your online message to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (ministry) regarding the screening for diabetic retinopathy. The ministry appreciates this opportunity to respond.
The physician service of using an artificial intelligence-based screening model for diabetic retinopathy is not listed in the Schedule and is therefore not an insured physician service.
You may be interested to know that the ministry has a process in place to review advances in technology, clinical evidence, and expert advice to determine whether new health technologies and services should be added to the Schedule of Benefits for Physician Services (the Schedule). Health Quality Ontario (HQO) and the Ontario Health Technology Assessment Committee (OHTAC) conduct reviews of new technologies and services and provide advice and recommendations to the ministry. Through this process, the ministry is assured that new services are generally recognized by appropriate specialists as being medically necessary and that appropriate definitions, conditions, clinical eligibility criteria and fees are determined.
To date, OHTAC has not reviewed the use of Diagnos’ technology for screening diabetic patients.
The public can request that OHTAC conduct a review of a specific health technology, provided that it meets the application criteria. You can find more information online at https://www.hqontario.ca/ .
I trust this information is helpful. Thank you again for writing.
Sincerely,
D. Ramanayake
