Aphria Inc. APHA

Aphria, which is headquartered in Ontario, produces and sells medicinal and recreational cannabis. The company operates through retail and wholesale channels in Canada and internationally. Aphria is a main distributor of medical cannabis to Germany and has operations in over 10 countries outside of Canada. However, it does not have exposure to the U.S. CBD or THC markets due to the constraints of federal prohibition. It has some U.S. exposure through the acquisition of SweetWater, a craft brewer

In that order, when would you start cultivating?
Through Colcanna we already have the CBD license (one of the cannabis compounds). We are about to get another one that is process and extraction and a last of THC (the predominant psychoactive chemical compound in cannabis). Additionally, a license for the seeds must be processed with the ICA. Due to the electoral situation, the procedures have been delayed, but we hope to have everything by the end of July to begin with.

THE CONTRASTS

  • ALEJANDRO URDANETAGENERAL MANAGER OF COLCANNA

"While we educate the community and increase local consumption, we can export from Colombia to other markets in the region."

Once the cultivation begins, in how much time could the final product be seen in the market?
They are more or less four months: three of growth and one more of process.

With these 15 hectares, what culture capacity would they have and how would that translate into the number of patients?
Taking into account the metrics we use in Canada, there would be 25,000 tons of cannabis per year that, after the whole procedure, would serve more or less 50,000 patients.

What is your opinion on Colombian regulation?
We find that the licensing process is quite complete and well organized so that the crime actors do not enter it. One of the reasons why we are in Colombia is precisely because its regulatory framework is focused on medicine and that is part of our DNA. Our success will be measured in the degree to which we can introduce safe products, train doctors and provide sustainable quality to educate the market.
