Global Data announces StarView family of video modems for security and transportation markets
Video transmission and access over IP Networks
TORONTO, Nov. 13 /CNW/ - Global Data, through its StarComm Products
division, today announced its StarView family of video modems that allow
highly-efficient compressed video to be delivered over low-bandwidth IP
(Internet Protocol) networks.
The new device directly addresses pressures in the telemetry market,
particularly in the ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) and Security
segments, to deliver data, including compressed video, over IP networks. This
approach offers greater flexibility and efficiency than traditional methods.
"StarView is the first of a family of IP devices designed specifically
for telemetry applications," said Phil Sutter, President of StarComm. "Many of
our customers are facing market pressure to upgrade their existing security or
ITS equipment offerings to operate on standard IP networking technology. There
is also significant pressure to integrate video into a variety of ITS and
security applications. This product offering provides StarComm customers with
a turn-key method of accomplishing both the video convergence and the network
upgrade. Because it can accept industry standard RS232 and RS485 serial
streams from existing security or ITS equipment, the new product provides an
effective way for companies to make their legacy systems IP-capable," added
Sutter.
The device is capable of accepting video from four standard cameras and
compressing it so that it can be transmitted over a range of networking
technologies including Ethernet, a dial up telephone line, or even low-cost
twisted-pair campus wiring. The IP-based video can be viewed on any PC running
Windows-based viewing software.
The release of the new video modem is the result of a two-year joint
development project between StarComm and Benchmark Labs, Inc. of Redondo
Beach, CA. The integration of Benchmark's highly-efficient, patent-pending
video compression technology with StarComm's data communications hardware and
embedded firmware creates highly-efficient video transmission for low-
bandwidth telemetry applications.
According to Lawrence Davis, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Global Data, "This architecture places these products at the forefront of the
emerging video-over-IP market and positions our company as a leader in
evolving a new generation of telemetry and network technology."
Benchmark Labs, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Prime Group, a
Tokyo-based company specializing in image compression and processing
technologies.
Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Global Data designs, develops,
manufactures, markets and supports remote communications solutions for
commercial and industrial markets. The company's communication solutions
include wireless, wireline and mobile computing devices supported by a
national wireless data service.
