BAR has both NI and Cobalt
BAR has both NI and Cobalt6.) R&D from battery manufactures is looking at a way to formulate an EV battery that relies less on cobalt and more on nickel, is this something you’ve heard of and what impact would this have on your business?
There will always be a push to increase the efficiency of batteries. Like any technology, it will evolve. It is common knowledge that manufacturers are trying to engineer cobalt down while increasing nickel, with the caveat that cobalt is likely not engineered completely out within the context of existing technology. It’s important to note that the lithium ion battery already has much more nickel than cobalt, and as this percentage increases the net effect is excellent for both metals. As cobalt is engineered down, because cobalt is expensive the battery itself becomes cheaper creating more demand for batteries and more gross demand for cobalt. In this model, nickel wins twice and hence our belief is that nickel is the real battery metal – but without cobalt it’s unstable, and given that these batteries are in our pockets, our airplanes and parked in our garages as we sleep– safety is paramount.
