Increasing the number of shares outstanding is called dilution. Dilute means to water down, weaken, lessen. Look at it this way, if someone buys your company for $200 million, would you rather they have 200 million shares out or 50 million (like Irving Resources)? one gives you $1 a share the other gives you $4 per share.
