Short for 5 minutes or five days it doesnt matter,you have a "real" short position . period.

The volume you are trying to refere to is simply market makers shorting and covering seconds later usually either at the behest of a client or simply to provide liquidity in the market and rarely reflect their sentiment on the stock in general.
