Although sales are obviously critical to survive, they are far from being the only issue. Airlines are also very concerned with production timelines and also and may be foremost, customer service and maintenance network for the airplanes you purchased.
If I am an airline based in Asia doing business mostly with routes in Asia, I do not want to have to go to the USA for maintenance and repairs. In my view, this was a critical reason as to why so many airlines were hesitant to buy the C series.
