Let's say they are in phase II. It takes more than just a few months to complete such trial. It can take a upwards to a few years. The whole clinical trials process can take anywhere from 5-10 years from phase I all the way to III. It actually doesn't end there. There is technically a phase IV trial after the drug has been approved, which is for post-market studies. Because at that point it is released for public use and you would have a much larger population to study. This is where they look for rare side effects and potential black box warnings that didn't show up in the clinical trials.
