Reviewing this year's tradingWith a stock this small, it's not hard to track down (in retrospect) what has happened over a time period like a year. I downloaded the TMX trading data from 2018, put it in some graphs which are meaningful, and conclude this story. Begining of January, some fund took a 1.5MM share position, maybe on speculation of GK cash flow. End of January, there was a bunch of trading in advance of the KDI buyout. Initial negative sentiment on the deal (probably driven by whining bulletin board posters, as the Company did a poor job of supporting the move with PR) later drove the stock price to under C$3 on April 17, at which time some fund had to divest. There was additional selling around May 31, just in time for some fund's Q2 close; I'm guessing they didn't want to show MPVD on the books. There was another (smaller) pop in volume on August 3, when the SP dipped briefly below C$3 again. Maybe some fund manager found a share certificate or 3 under a couch. More than half the time, MPVD daily volume is under 100k shares. Unless they use a Dark Pool (or arrange a Private Placement), it takes a couple weeks or a month to unwind a 1MM share position. In retrospect, I wish I had taken tis money 10 years ago and bought AAPL or some index fund; but this is one of the downsides of diversification - there are some laggards to go with the winners. Cheers, all.
