Horseraddish -  You're not getting the 'loyality' part. It's to keep you buying from one provider. After all what is the advantage to any service provider if they don't have some exclusive offer - ie points

Justbull4u - I want to live in your world of unicorns and fairy dust. Yes, AP could partner with hotels and car rental companies...hey why not grocery stores and gas stations, the LCBO and maybe change it's name to Air Miles - Oh!, wait a minute.
