When someone makes an offer you make a counteroffer. If you've ever bartered at a market in Italy you'll know that a 100 euro price can end up at 30. 

As for explanation - Why do you think an explanation is required? Mittleman was not speaking for the board but rather as an activist investor. His statement was not an official Aimia NR.
