RE:RE:Brrrr... Here Comes Winter
RE:RE:Brrrr... Here Comes WinterI’ve worked in my share of mines and you are correct in thinking dry -20 temperatures dont create much material or equipment problems if everything keeps moving. It’s the shoulder seasons between -5 and -20 that cause the most problems. In Northern Canada that only lasts a few weeks but in NS the freeze thaw cycles happen all winter long with cold damp air rather than the dry air of Timmins. All the material from stemming through to tailings will be freezing and thawing daily and haul roads will need to be shutdown for freezing rain and snow, especially as they get deeper in the pit. The fleet is not large enough to crash one truck without an impact on production numbers. Other mines in NS only operate during the day and have larger more permanent haul roads. It will be a challenge in a pit this size but it will also be a chance to see what they can accomplish prior to branching into other pits and long hauls over the backroads of NS
