When a big company comes in to take a stake of another company, they DO NOT go to the secondary market and buy the shares in the open market from existing retail shareholders like you and me. Especially since the company (i.e. Aurora) would not be receiving any of the monies this way.
What happens is that they agree to a pre-set price with Aurora who would then issue additional shares accordingly to matach this agreed upon price. Aurora would then get all of the money from the compensation paid to them by the acquiring company, whether it be Coke, some big pharma compnay, etc.
This is basically what will take place between Canopy and Constellation once all of the necessary approvals have been received.
