Automation of surface mining equipment is currently at the 240 ton and above level for applications where the equipment spends a considerable portion of the haut cycle on privately owned access roads that do not change course. Examples are tar sands, copper mines, and surface pits serviced by electric or large hydraulic shovels with 40 yard and greater buckets that feed trucks with cycle times greater than one hour. Automation is not suitable for short hauls with changing haul roads such as those at AGC.
On highway trucks won’t see automation for many years. Most likely another decade minimum. North American trucks are having a hard enough time accepting automatic transmissions. The European market will be the leaders in on-highway truck automation when it finally does come.
