Co2 Solutions Inc COSLF

CO2 Solutions Inc is a Canada-based firm engaged in the development of proprietary technologies for capturing and producing of carbon dioxide. The company is focused on commercializing an enzyme-based technology for efficient CO2 capture from various industrial flue gasses for reuse or sequestration. The company's technology has various industrial applications, such as enhanced oil recovery, pulp and paper, water treatment, greenhouses, beverage carbonation, and other uses. Most of its revenue comes from the Canada market, while it also has a presence in the United States and European countries.

National Resources Canada Evaluates CST's Enzymatic CC Tech

National Resources Canada Evaluates CST's Enzymatic CC TechCanadian federal government report states that CO2 Solutions techology "is ready for commercial deployment.  Plans for a 30 tpd system at a greenhouse operation in Quebec and another of up to 300 tpd in Alberta are underway."

https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/funding/current-funding-programs/eii/16061

Pros: widesread utilization of this technology would reduce the CO2 released into the environment, and is near or under the penalties imposed under progressive Carbon Cap and Trade regulations. It's use would be a bottom line net benefit to the producers.

Cons:

The NRC statement frames the primary application as "a mitigation option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in unconventional oil production." As such, oil would continue to be produced, sold, and processed as usual, producing CO2.

The CO2 captured by this process is reutilized, not sequestered/stored. Recycled rather then released into the environment... but ultimately released when consumed as carbonated beverages, for example.

The Federal government's emphasis may be politically motivated, to justify the continuing economic deployment of Oil Sands as being in harmony with urgent and aggressive CO2 reduction targets. A step in the right direction, yes. But much, much more must be done.

Uncertainties:

It it unclear if this technology is adaptable to the large-scale production of fossil-fuel energy production, such as natural gas fired plants. Generally the efficiency of CCS processes has been evaluated (in US sources) in relation to Coal-fired generation. In such sources enzymatic technologies for reutiliation were scarcely mentioned, among other "reutilization" methods. But such sources may now be obsolete, as this newly-proven techonology has come in at lower costs, and may have the potential for much wider application.

Reasons for Optimism:

Other technologies may be developed to provide for the actual sequestration of the highly-concentrated CO2 gases produced by
CO2 Solutions' enzymatic technology (CO2 S ET). This lies outside the scope of the goals of this company, but as a priority for Earth as a whole, emerging technologies for sequestration may rely upon the use of CO2 S ET to provide inputs for any such sequestration processes.

The Big Question:

Can
CO2 S ET be applied economically to other major producers of greenhouse gases, in particular, natural-gas power generation facilities?

It may be that the concentration of CO2 in their exhaust gases are already relatively low and the efficiency of
CO2 S ET becomes uneconomical as a ratio of cost to efficiency.

On the other hand, there is an obvious potential for widespread application to industrial facilities with high-intensity
CO2 production. The rapid deployment of CO2 S ET to existing sources of greenhouse gases world-wide may be vital to acheiving significant reductions in the immediate future. Many industries and nations may not be able to cease buring fossil fuels immediately, but the can apply this techology immediately at a relativel low cost.

All we need are for the politicians (and their supporters) to demand that we do so, in every nation.

How tragic it will be if ten years from now, climate change Neanderthals like Trump and Ford are still fighting to undo such changes for the beter, and this technology remains a sad footnote in the story of the greatest man-made catastrophy in history.

I am long in CST, discouraged, but committed.
