To start at the bottom means you have to tunnel down the full distance before mining, which in turn means that all the cost and time is up-front before you even strike a blow. I'd say that shows some confidence that they can support that cost for however much time it's going to take to get down there.

One advantage is that they will commence mining upwards at a depth where where the kimberlite is encased in hard granite, which is a big plus. Another is that grade is known to improve with depth so that payback might be faster.
