John Kaiser has no training in mineral exploration or mining, yet offers excellent insights. He is the exception though, rather than the rule. Most mining analysts have a background in either geology or engineering in addition to financial analysis. For example, BMO consists of a professional geo and an engineer. They are Qualified Persons (QP) according to the Canadian legal NI 43-101 definition. These guys could not only go out and give you advice. They could build the mine for you. I find sites like Seeking Alpha are best for getting ideas about projects that other analysts may have overlooked. For major projects, it’s useful to review several analysts before coming to an investment decision.
