Alton court decision

Posted on March 18, 2019

We welcome the decision today from the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia to grant the injunction request as it relates to our Alton Natural Gas Storage Project.

With this decision in hand, we are currently determining our immediate next steps. The safety of the site is our focus, and our intention is to access the site as soon as practicable to repair damaged electrical systems and equipment.

Our commitment remains to continue working with Mi’kmaw communities, area residents, partners and government to develop this important infrastructure project responsibly, which will provide Nova Scotians with cleaner, affordable and reliable energy year-round.

Since the project’s inception, we have met with, and continue to meet, numerous stakeholders with an interest in our project, including landowners, community members, government and the Mi’kmaq to share information and exchange viewpoints. We truly believe the Alton project can be a success story for all those involved.

To-date, we have completed two environmental assessments of the Alton Project and have 10 years of ongoing scientific monitoring of the tidal Shubenacadie River. We have also worked with the Mi’kmaq who led an independent, third-party scientific review of the project, which generated recommendations we are in the process of implementing. We will continue this open dialogue with all interested parties as we work through our operational plans for the project.

Visit the Alton website www.altonnaturalgasstorage.ca to access infographics, science videos and fact sheets, as well as in-depth questions and answers about the project. Topics include the brining process to create the natural gas storage caverns, environmental monitoring and research on the tidal Shubenacadie River, safety and community engagement.
