Nor do you know whether they have a solar/wind/hydro system to run it reliably and off-grid. I suspect not, since they have the NG available, but that’s only my guess.

A properly sized and installed geothermal system works just fine.
So either your friends are stupid suckers, or you are lying.
Having said that, I wouldn't use geothermal, as electricity costs will continue to rise, while natural gas will remain affordable as long as I am alive.
