Deutsche Bucht offshore substation completed Van Oord completes installation of Deutsche Bucht offshore substation
April 8 (Renewables Now) - Northland Deutsche Bucht GmbH last week announced the completion of the offshore substation for its 269-MW wind project in the German North Sea.
General contractor Van Oord installed the substation about 100 km from the German mainland in the German Exclusive Economic Zone. It built the components in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, and used the Seaway Strashnov vessel to anchor the jacket in the seabed and then lift the topside platform onto the foundation.
“In the future, this offshore substation will convert the power generated by our 33 turbines, transforming it from 33 to 155 kilovolts for further transmission,” Jens Poulsen, Project Director at Northland Deutsche Bucht GmbH, explained in a statement.
The Deutsche Bucht project company is 100%-owned by Canada-based power producer Northland Power Inc (TSE:NPI), which also has two other offshore wind projects in the North Sea. The developer is now getting ready to initiate the next construction phase for Deutsche Bucht this spring -- the installation of inter-array cabling. This will be followed by the installation of the 33 units of MHI Vestas’ V164-8.4 turbines during the summer so that the wind farm is up and running by the end of the year.
