Large Rally and Car March for Amulsar

Large Rally and Car March for Amulsar

Almost 11 months ago the people of Jermuk made their final decision - Amulsar mountain will remain untouched, pure and clean water sources will keep running to Lake Sevan, and Jermuk will stay Armenia's major tourism and resort center. For 300 days and nights the defenders of Amulsar have been blockading the mountain roads in order to protect not only Jermuk but also the entire Central and Southern Armenia from an ecological collapse, as well as to defend their democratic rights of participating in the decision-making. They have not only gone through daily hardships of a year-long camping, but they also continuously face harassment and pressures of the mining company, including being sued in the courts. Throughout all these months, Amulsar defenders have had the support of the Armenian society, the active members of the Armenian diaspora and the international communities of environmentalists and human rights defenders.

On May 11, the people of Jermuk and everyone else who is opposed to mining in Amulsar will once again go to the streets and restate our firm decision - no mining in Amulsar! In December 2018, 300 members of Jermuk community (which is more than 90% of the de facto resident adult population) has signed a petition demanding to ban metal mining in their community; the petition was backed by the local community council. We want our voice to be heard clear and loud for the Government of Armenia - the opinion of the community has to count, the community wants clean ecology and economy.
