My take on GSjust my 2 cents... and not worth more than that...
I was realizing that GS, as he has stated, has been in the business since the 70's or 80's... putting quarters in pay phones in a hotel lobby to cold call customers... writing reports by hand until he could get to the office to type into a mainframe...
I was also in this era when I started my career in IT... it was mainframes, terminals,,, dial up internet wasn't even invented. So I know much about IT of that era but if you threw me into a job working with IT professionals today I'd be way in over my head... so much has changed.
Same for oil and gas... how many uncoventional plays were there in the 80s when GS was in his learning prime? He maybe know a lot about the industry in general and the buzzwords as I do about computing, but our knowledge of modern technologies and techniques is out of date.... that simple.
It hit me when he was able to ask intelligent questions, but then Sean gave him answers he seemed to have been unable to consider until that point.... he seemed sheepish in being bested by a younger more in touch professional who is on top of his game.
Personally I would not have the arrogance or delusion to think I could compete with those who have stayed in the business... I lost interest in my 40s and was able to move onto a new career... I know I am way out of my league in my old field. I wonder if GS realized that today.
