State media points to REEs as leverage against US

State media points to REEs as leverage against US

SHENZHEN, China (AP)

State media have suggested that China’s rare earth resources could be
used as leverage against the United States in the countries’ ongoing
trade dispute.

The official newspaper of the ruling Communist Party, People’s Daily,
said in an editorial Wednesday that the U.S. is a major buyer of China’s
rare earth materials and is “highly dependent” on such resources.

Columns from the official Xinhua News Agency and the Global Times
newspaper also pointed to China’s rich supply of rare earths.

An official in China’s top economic planning agency did not rule out
using rare earths as a countermeasure against “the U.S.’s unwarranted
suppression.”
