Could Google buy Gooseberry? Maybe not that far fetched Could Google buy Gooseberry? Maybe not as far fetched as you would think...
As a Reno resident I have been familiar with the Gooseberry Mine for most of my life.
When it was owned by Assamera it was a thriving business with nearly 300 employees. Good paying jobs for the local economy, especially during that time in Reno when the economy was depressed. Gooseberry has been operating since the Martin family ran it in 1920. Their main road ran from the mine down to what is now known as USA Parkway.
Here is what you may not know about Reno, Gooseberry and American Pacific today.
First off , Reno.
Second, Gooseberry
The Gooseberry Mine is located 30 minutes outside of Reno....just off of USA Parkway. Their main access road to the mine runs through the land now owned by Google. Their new $600 million data center is less than 3/4 of a mile from the mine and will block their primary access road.
Of note, legally a road constructed or used before 1930 is given road rights via statue protecting the viability of the mine.
Third, American Pacific
Management at American Pacific is aware of the issue. I called the CEO myself to discuss the access into Gooseberry. He politely but firmly responded "That he will not discuss access to Gooseberry at this time." He walked me through the deal with Oceana, discussed Tuscarora, gave a great overview of Gooseberyy but refused to discuss access at Gooseberry.
Something is a foot here.
No chance Google wants an active mine directly behind them, especially after a $600+ million investment.
No chance American Pacific is going to walk away from what could be a lucrative high grade mine with a great deal of potential.
One should consider the option that Google would much rather make this issue go away.
American Pacific has an $8 million market cap.
