Marathon Gold Corporation is a Canada-based gold exploration and development company. The Company’s primary business focus is the exploration and development of its flagship asset, the wholly owned Valentine Gold Project, located in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The project comprises a series of five mineralized deposits along a 32- kilometer system. Its prospects are located along the Valentine Lake Shear Zone and include Frank Zone, Rainbow Zone, Triangle Zone, Victoria Bridge, Narrows, Victory Southwest, Victory Northeast, and the Berry Zone. In addition to the Valentine Gold Project in the Central Region of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Company holds 100% interests in the Bonanza Mine, a former mine located in Baker County in northeastern Oregon, the Gold Reef property, an exploration property consisting of approximately 12 hectares of claims located near Stewart, British Columbia; and a 2% net smelter returns royalty on precious metal sales by the Golden Chest mine in Idaho.

RBC increases price target to $2.00 with Outperform rating

RBC increases price target to $2.00 with Outperform rating
Released on September 5th, 2019:

Price target:  $2.00
Outperform
Speculative Risk

Investment summary

Our Outperform (Speculative Risk) rating is premised on our constructive outlook on the underlying fundamentals of Valentine Lake, scarcity of comparable pre-development stage projects, and takeover potential.  Marathon is an exploration-stage gold company advancing its flagship Valentine Lake project in Newfoundland.

• Valentine Lake expected to be a high-return project.

In our view, Valentine Lake has the potential to be developed into a high-return project given the asset's above-average grade for an open-pit operation, solid scale, and exploration upside. The recent optimized PEA outlined average annual production of 225 Koz at mine-site AISC of $666/oz over a 12+ year life.

• Further resource growth expected.

We expect Marathon to continue to grow resources at Valentine Lake through its ongoing drill program, specifically expanding the Marathon deposit along strike and testing for
additional discoveries across its 240 km2 land package.

• Scarcity of comparable assets increases takeover potential.

We believe Marathon is a higher potential takeover target given Valentine Lake is one of only a handful of exploration-stage assets with fundamental characteristics for which the larger precious metals producers are looking, including the potential production profile, mine life, and cost structure located in a geopolitically stable and mining-friendly jurisdiction.

Potential catalysts and share price drivers

• Ongoing optimization of the process flow sheet as additional metallurgical testwork is completed.
• Greater exploration success than currently anticipated.
• M&A potential given many larger producers have struggled to replace/grow reserves, and  scarcity of high-grade projects located in miningfriendly/stable jurisdictions.

Risks to valuation

• Financing risk. Marathon is a number of years from generating revenue and is forecast to end 2018 with ~C$3M in cash. (note: predates this morning's announcement and financing)
• Commodity risk. Investor sentiment toward exploration-stage companies is dependent on the underlying price of gold.
• Exploration risk. Marathon continues to test the limits of the Valentine Lake property.
• Technical risk. Relatively early-stage nature of the project.
