Second Thoughts on the Data Transformation

Second Thoughts on the Data TransformationHi All,

A colleague I respect read the INMA article and cautioned me to give Torstar a chance saying that just because I don't understand the transformation doesn't mean it won't work.  I thought about those wise words overnight and came to the following conclusions:

  •  A desperate and unqualified CEO with a background in marketing is ill-equipped to understand and lead an organization in a death spiral.  This data transformation scam is a distraction from the fundamental rot in the organization.
  • A CFO that is even more unqualified than the CEO further increases the risks of everything ending badly.  When your two top executives are incompetent that does not bode well for the future of any organization.
  • The Board does not have a single member that has the faintest idea of how to govern a 21st-century media company.  They would be completely intimidated by this gobbledygook.  "The goal by 2021 is to have real-time decision-making processes moving toward a concept we call Next Best Advice by predicting what our clients need next."  Who is asking them to show the actual real-world ROI on this concept?  Fearing they will look stupid or sceptical paralyzes them so they play along.
  • "Transforming the company culture and democratising data quickly emerged as key factors for success."  A survey of Torstar employees will reveal this is a complete fraud.  Employees are so demoralized by the lack of focus on what they all know is paramount - great journalism that drives readership and leads to advertisers wanting to be associated with your content.
  • This Data Transformation is a familiar scam for businesses in trouble who latch onto a fad.  Data transformation worked for Google and Facebook because they weren't burdened by dinosaurs like Honderich who are locked into an era that is long past.
  • I completely understand what they are promoting with Data Transformation and don't dismiss it out of ignorance.  This clown act will end badly because they completely miss the point about a news media company.  The New York Times is successful because they hire and promote the best journalists and invest in talent.  These guys are only concerned with lining their pockets and that is a travesty.  This BS can't be exposed soon enough.
