The sledgehammer environmental campaign that has shut down all Canadian crude oil pipelines to tidewater has a new target: shutting down Canadian exports of liquified natural gas to Asia, says activist Vivian Krause.
“They are coming for the LNG industry, absolutely,” Krause said in an interview.
Some in B.C. believe everything is fine and going ahead with LNG, and the low-carbon gas is going to help get China off of coal and curb global carbon emissions, Krause says. But wealthy U.S. foundations and the Canadian green and Indigenous groups they fund are focused on stopping an industry that is gearing up to bring billions to the Canadian economy.
“Look at what all the groups say. They’re all campaigning against the LNG projects.”
Krause, the independent researcher who meticulously researched and documented how tens of millions of dollars from U.S. foundations helped landlock the Alberta oilsands, is getting out her message in a new way through a documentary, Over a Barrel.
The World Wildlife Fund Canada got $2 million for marine planning. Its former president, Gerald Butts, went on to be Justin Trudeau’s key adviser. As Krause puts it: “Under Justin Trudeau one of the first things the federal government did in 2015 was to approve the type of marine plans that had been funded by the Moore Foundation, setting aside a huge area of the coast of Canada roughly the size of Saskatchewan.”
It’s crucial to protect the gorgeous B.C. coast, Krause says, but she points out none of these big-money U.S. foundations have launched similar campaigns to sterilize the California, Oregon, Washington or Alaska coasts from industry.
As foreign campaigns go, the U.S.-led anti-Canadian oil and gas campaign has been both brilliant in execution and results. We’re only now coming to understand what we’ve been up against. Some are calling for taking away the charitable status of any Canadian groups that gobble up such money.
Knowing what we’re up against, we’re less likely to fall under the spell of green groups that purport to be all about saving the world, but also have this horrid side mission of shutting down the Canadian economy.
