RE:Open pitShort answer:  100m to 150m is the maximum open pit for standard deposit.  After that, you usualy use an in-pit ramp or sink a shaft.  So open pit is possible.

Long answer:  The first answer is bull$hit.  It all depends on the economics.  If you can get your hands on the block model and perform a  Lerchs-Grossmann optimization on it you will have your ultimate pit depth.  You then compare the openpit economics with the UG economics to get the breakeven depth.  Finally, you adjust that depth based on the operation risk tolerance.  Usually, the operation favors/starts w/ open-pit to access cash flow ASAP to pay the hungry bankers...
