RE:RE:RE:Failed Alberta sugar beet harvesting aside !Below copied and paste from Barchart Mar NY world sugar #11 (SBH20) this morning is down -0.01 (-0.08%) and Mar London white sugar #5 (SWH20) is up +1.30 (+0.39%). Sugar prices are mixed this morning with NY sugar undercut by weakness in the Brazilian real, while London sugar rose on reduced sugar output from India, the world's second-largest sugar producer. The Brazilian real is down -0.35% against the dollar today, just above Tuesday's 4-year low against the dollar. The weaker real encourages export selling by Brazil's sugar producers Sugar prices have support from the outlook for smaller sugar production in India after the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) on Wednesday reported that that India's sugar production during Oct 1-Nov 15 plunged -64% y/y to 485,000 MT. The ISMA on Nov 5 projected India 2019/20 sugar production will fall -19% y/y to 26.85 MMT. Sugar prices have seen support from recent frost conditions in the U.S. that damaged U.S. sugar beet crops. Marex Spectron on Monday said that frost damage to beet crops in North Dakota and Minnesota, along with 12 hours of freezing conditions for Louisiana beet crops, will cut U.S. sugar production by up to 1.0 MMT. Two U.S. sugar beet producers in Louisiana last Wednesday declared force majeure on sugar deliveries because frost cut their sugar beet production. Sugar prices are also seeing support from strong ethanol demand in Brazil after Unica reported last Monday that Brazil Center-South sugar mills sold 2.1 billion liters of hydrous ethanol in Oct, up 5.0% y/y and a record for a single month. The record sales of ethanol may prompt Brazil's sugar mills to divert more cane crushing toward ethanol production rather than sugar production, thus reducing sugar supplies. Signs of larger global supplies are negative for sugar prices after France's Agriculture Ministry last Tuesday raised its 2019 sugar beet production forecast for France, the EU's largest sugar producer, to 37.2 MMT from October's forecast of 36.9 MMT. Also, Unica last Monday reported that Brazil 2019/20 Center-South sugar production through Oct rose +3.3% y/y to 25.233 MT.
