As the October 17th, 2019 deadline approaches, licensed producers all over Canada are preparing to gain a competitive, innovative edge in what will surely be a saturated edible industry.
To that end, Zenabis revealed in a news release that they plan to work with Canadian beverage company, Hilsboro Corp Incorporated (known to consumers as True Buch Kombucha), to create a line of cannabis Kombucha products.
What is Kombucha?
For those out of the loop, Kombucha is a fermented, alcohol-free tea beverage that is especially popular among health enthusiasts. Due to the fermentation process, the final product has a wine-like, subtle carbonation and is filled with amino acids, enzymes and probiotics.
Although it may not be for everyone, infusing it with cannabinoids might just pique the interest of curious marijuana veterans and newcomers alike.
Working Together
Partnerships seem to be the key as licensed producers gear up for edibles – our story on Organigram and Canada’s Smartest Kitchen being another example.
This is of course a smart move. While licensed producers like Zenabis may have the resources to grow and process large amounts of marijuana, edibles are uncharted territory. Zenabis explains in their news release:
“Zenabis and True Buch intend to draw upon each other’s expertise to infuse cannabis into True Buch beverages when permitted under applicable laws and regulations, creating a cultured tea beverage CBD or THC product”.
With skilled experts on both side, consumers can have high hopes for excellent products down the road.
THC and CBD Available
As mentioned above, Zenabis and True Buch intend to offer both THC and CBD products. This is excellent news for individuals who prefer the benefits of cannabis without intoxication.
More importantly, it helps bring CBD into the mainstream and usurp the unregulated CBD market that has invaded store shelves.
Final Thoughts
While the initial rollout in 2018 was rocky, licensed producers appear to have learned their lesson from being unprepared. The fact that big names like Zenabis are seeking the guidance of reputable, experienced food and beverage companies shows their commitment to quality.
Granted, this does not mean that bringing edibles into the market will be easy. Chances are it will only put a strain on our already stretched cannabis supply. But at least it will help bring in a new group of consumers who – once supply balances out – represent a major demographic of cannabis users.
